[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:11] Speaker B: Welcome Back to our HSK1 Masterclass podcast with Kanye Chinese School. So I'm your host today, Emily. And today we are going to learn a very important lesson which is about the money.
So it's always very important to ask how much Is it very important to know the prices to not to be scammed.
So like always, let's start with a quick video first to get into it.
Foreign.
[00:00:59] Speaker A: Today the lesson is from Hong Kong, Shangan.
Today we'll go shopping.
We learn some useful phrases that we can use when we go shopping in China.
As a reminder, it's very important to pronounce well the verbs buy and to sell. Since the Pinyin is the same, only the tone changes.
Let's see.
My with the third tone means to buy, and my with the fourth tone means to sell.
For example, what does mean?
See, that is a four tone. Well done.
It means, what does this store sell?
Let's try another one. Pay attention to the tone.
What does it mean?
Perfect. I bought some apple.
Since the action is in the past, remember to use the particle L.
Finally, we'll learn how to ask, how much is it?
What do you think?
What word should we use to say how, how much in this case?
Or what we buy will most probably cost more than 10 yuan, the Chinese currency.
So we'll always use when asking for the price.
So to ask for example, how much is this book?
Will literally say, this book, how much money?
Now go practice, but don't spend too much.
I say goodbye from Shangan. Hong Kong has 112 skyscrapers with a height over 600ft. Oh, I'm so scared. Scared of heights.
[00:03:37] Speaker B: Okay, perfect.
So did you guys pay attention to the video?
So what is. What are the two important words that we learned?
That's right.
My to buy and to sell.
So remember the tones that are different but the pin are the same.
So how would you memorize it?
So I have a little tip to my students.
I would say that when you're thinking about buying something, we always think a lot, right? We are always thinking, oh, do I need it? Do I not? But I really like it. But do I really need it? Is it useful?
Is it suitable? So you think a lot when you're buying. So the tone would be my.
My. The tone is like going down and then going up. Like what you're thinking, like, right? My.
But when you're selling something, you're very aggressive. Like, take it, buy it, give me your money. Right?
So the tone is my fourth tone. My with a very aggressive tone. Okay, so this Is my little tip for my students.
And now let's take a look at the. The other thing that is also important, How much is it?
So remember, the word qian means money. The thing itself, money.
It doesn't mean the currency. The currency is.
So when you use it, doesn't matter where you are using it, you can always say it to your friends in America and England whatsoever. So simply, how much is it? So yuan is the currency in China.
Okay, so we can ask.
We can always put the thing that you want to buy in front of this sentence.
So for example, how much is this book?
And also if you are.
If you want to sound more polite, we could always put in the front of the sentence.
And also we can always say, and you don't remember, what is the name of this thing? You can always say.
It is always useful to remember the word.
Okay, so let's take a look.
If we say it to the owner of the store, we could say, I want to buy this book, I would like to buy this book, or I want to buy a bottle of water.
Okay, so in this case, remember, doesn't make much difference because you are buying it. It doesn't make really big difference between these three verbs in this situation. Okay, and how do we say it if it's past tense?
Very good. So we put after the verb, so we could say, I bought this book, I bought a bottle of water.
Okay, very good.
So at last, let's do a little pop quiz. Okay, I'm gonna say two sentence and you have to listen carefully about when did I say buy, when did I say sell?
Okay, how so the first one is.
The second one.
Okay, so is the first one to buy or to sell?
Is the second one to buy or to sell?
Okay, let's check the answer.
[00:08:31] Speaker A: Now.
[00:08:33] Speaker B: The first one I said was I bought a cloth.
The second one I said was I sewed a cloth.
Okay, did you guys get that right? If not, you can always review the whole video. But I'm sure that you all did well. Okay, so that is the lesson for today.
